FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. — The Washington Air National Guard activated the 111th Contingency Response Squadron during a ceremony at Fairchild Air Force Base, on April 19, 2026, strengthening the state’s ability to integrate airpower with ground operations in both federal and domestic missions.

The 111th CRS serves as the primary responder force for Air Mobility Command, specifically designed to rapidly open, operate, and eventually close airfields in austere, contested, or unprepared environments. Often described as an air base in a box, these squadrons provide the essential infrastructure and personnel needed to establish air mobility operations where none exist.

“This activation builds capability where it matters most—at the point where air and ground operations come together,” said Maj. Jon Cael, 111th CRS commander. “It ensures we’re ready to support joint partners at home and abroad.”

As part of the Air National Guard, the squadron supports the dual mission of delivering combat-ready forces abroad while strengthening Washington’s ability to respond to emergencies at home.

Contingency Response Squadrons are highly agile and capable of deploying on short notice. Their mission spans the full spectrum of military operations, from high-intensity conflict to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

“This is about readiness and integration,” said Cael. “Our Airmen will train to operate in challenging environments and deliver reliable support when it’s needed most.”

The ceremony included the unfurling of the squadron guidon, marking the unit’s official activation and entry into the operational force.

As the 111th CRS continues to grow, Airmen will focus on training and certification while building partnerships with other units to ensure seamless coordination across the joint force.
