SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard and San Francisco Police Department rescued three people Thursday morning after their vessel struck rocks and ran aground near the Golden Gate Bridge.

At approximately 6:08 a.m., Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders received a VHF radio report from a commercial fishing vessel of a boat aground between Needle Rock and Lime Point Lighthouse, near the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge, with three people aboard.

A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Golden Gate and personnel from the San Francisco Police Department responded. The Coast Guard crew rescued two people, while San Francisco police personnel rescued the third.

All three individuals were reported to be in critical condition at the time of the rescue. They were transferred to awaiting emergency medical services at Coast Guard Station Golden Gate for transport to Marin Health Medical Center.

The San Francisco Police Department later confirmed that one of the rescued individuals died at the hospital.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost his life,” said Capt. Jarod Toczko, commander, Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. “While our crews and partner agencies worked together to bring all three people to safety, we recognize that this rescue ended in a heartbreaking loss. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy.”

The National Park Service is leading salvage efforts, with Coast Guard response personnel supporting assessments of potential pollution risks and debris removal at the incident site.

The San Francisco Police Department is leading the investigation into the cause of the incident.
