Innovation doesn’t always require multi-million-dollar contracts or years of research, sometimes the best solutions come straight from the flight line and depot floor. Last month, the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex (OC-ALC) celebrated four creative, employee-driven solutions that are collectively saving the U.S. Air Force more than $1.78 million annually while fundamentally improving workplace safety and production speeds.
- Pallet Reclamation Pays Off:Faced with a shortage of serviceable pallets, a team from the 547th Propulsion Maintenance Squadron Jenniffer Everitt, Josh Lozer, Derrick Mitchell, and Tim Wood teamed up with the Defense Logistics Agency. By reclaiming excess pallets and establishing local storage areas, they cut procurement costs by$240,000 annuallyand kept production moving.
- Safety by Design:Tasked with maintaining a dust collector with no safe ladder or lift access, a 76th Maintenance Support Group team Thomas Bezinque, Donald Brauer, Million Habtemariam, and James “Charlie” Jacobs teamed up with welders, Colt Goodman, Travis Loveland, Anthony Riley, and Bobby Shatswell to design, fabricate and install a permanent maintenance platform. The effort saved$350,000and protected personnel from fall hazards.
- The Blue Dye Breakthrough:When clear cleaning chemicals made it impossible to see chemical coverage during aircraft paint preparation, paint adhesion suffered. Evan Mertes and Stephanie Richardson from the 569th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron worked with the chemical manufacturer to introduce blue dye. This simple visibility fix saved$562,000in labor and rework costs.
- Closing the Supply Chain Loop:At the 551st Commodities Maintenance Squadron, Whitney Abney, Scott Collier, Freddy McCarty, Travis Saylor, and Mike Smith noticed KC-135 flight control weights were being stored while another unit was constantly ordering brand-new replacements. By creating a quarterly tracking and transfer process with the 564th Aircraft Maintenance Group, they saved$637,000 annuallyand eased supply chain pressure.
Each of these achievements highlights how individual ingenuity keeps our combat assets ready and our personnel safe. Together, these combined efforts do more than just maintain our equipment, they keep our teams prepared, protect vital resources and ensure we maintain the highest level ofoperational readinessto meet any challenge.
